Acupuncture FAQs

Why choose Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the oldest continuously practiced form of medicine in the world, with a history
spanning 2,500 years and recorded in over 30,000 books. In essence, it is the largest, longest
running clinical trial in world history. When used by a trained professional, Acupuncture can offer
safe and lasting benefits to the body for a wide range of conditions, such as headaches, insomnia,
back pain and digestive problem’s to name just a few. According to the National Institute of
health, between 2002 and 2007, Acupuncture use among adults increased by approximately
1 million people, reaching an estimated 3.1 million adults.
What can Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is a safe and useful treatment for a wide range of conditions. In a clinical setting,
there are far more conditions that can be effectively treated by Acupuncture that may not be listed
below.
The Mayo clinic states that Acupuncture can be very helpful for the following conditions:
• Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
• Fibromyalgia
• Headaches
• Labor pain
• Low back pain
• Menstrual cramps
• Migraines
• Osteoarthritis
• Dental pain
• Tennis elbow
The National Institute of Health indicates that Acupuncture can be beneficial for:
• Addiction
• Asthma
• Carpal tunnel
• Myofascial pain
• Nausea
• Stroke rehabilitation

Is Acupuncture painful?

Sensations from Acupuncture needles are very minimal, and can include mild tingling, soreness
or aching. Other patient’s may feel nothing at all. Since Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural
ability to heal and attain balance, patients often feel very calm and relaxed during treatment.

 How does Acupuncture work?
Scientific research has discovered that Acupuncture points show a variety of unique bioelectric
properties. Stimulation of specific Acupuncture points can cause significant physiological
reactions in the body. Some of these include increased brain activity (such as the release of painkilling endorphins), enhanced function of the immune system, sympathetic/parasympathetic
nervous systems and endocrine system. Most of all, Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural
ability to heal itself, regain homeostasis, and maintain its relationship with nature.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is a very safe medical practice. Trained professionals use hair-thin, sterile needles
which are then inserted at various Acupuncture points in the body. Recent studies have showed
that serious side effects occur in less than 1.1 patients out of 10,000. The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) regulates acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners, requiring
that needles be manufactured and labeled according to certain standards. For example, the FDA
requires that needles be sterile, nontoxic, and labeled for single use by qualified
practitioners only.

What are the potential side effects?
The most common side effects from Acupuncture are light-headedness after treatment, or mild
bruising from the needles. Occasionally patients can get raised bumps on the skin for short
periods of time. Ultimately, most potential side effects from Acupuncture are very minimal in
severity and duration.
